City of Metropolis City Council met Aug. 13.

Here is the minutes provided by the Council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2018, in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Alderpersons were present: Alderman, Charles Barfield, Don Canada, Darryl Neill, Mike Hall, Chad Lewis, Chuck Short, John Taylor, Mayor William McDaniel, Corporate Counsel Rick Abell, City Clerk Jan Adams and concerned citizens of Metropolis. Alderman Al Wagner was absent.

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Chad Lewis a motion to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on 7-23-2018 as presented;

Chief Masse and Sgt. Bruce Laird presented a Good Citizenship Award to Ms. Juanita Cummins for her good deed. Ms. Cummins found a purse during the Superman Celebration full of money and personal belongings. She immediately turned it in to the authorities who returned its rightful owner. This is what Metropolis is about and we thank you for your integrity and honesty added the Mayor.

MAYOR’S REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Charles Barfield to make a motion to accept closure of Vienna Street from 7th to 8th for block party of September 3rd, 2018 for the Missionary Baptist Church;

The AACA National Tour will be in Metropolis October 21-26 and invites everyone to attend. There will be an ice cream social featuring ice cream from Sissy’s Sweet Shoppe and Dipping Dots located at the Chamber of Commerce. Several uptown businesses are planning to stay open welcoming all to come shop and enjoy the car show on October 23rd. All antique car enthusiasts are invited to bring their cars to display.

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to make a motion to accept road closure on October 23rd from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm on Market Street from 6th to 8th Street for the purpose of car sponsored by the AACA;

Moved by Alderman Chad Lewis and second by Alderman Charles Barfield to make a motion to Adopt a Resolution requesting closure of Route 45 for the Annual Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 3rd beginning at 10 am;

Moved by Alderman Darryl Neill and second by Alderman Chad Lewis to make a motion to Adopt a Resolution requesting closure of Route 45 for the Annual Homecoming Parade on Friday, September 14th beginning at 3:30 pm;

Chad Murray brought the motion to appoint a DZO (Designated Zone Organization) member to the City of Metropolis. Members shall serve three-year staggered terms, with four members appointed by the chief elected official of each party with the fifth member appointed by a consensus of other members. Mayor McDaniel stated he would appoint himself to the position.

Moved by Alderman Darryl Neill and second by Alderman Mike Hall to make a motion to appoint Mayor McDaniel to the Massac County Enterprise Zone DZO for a term of 3 years;

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Charles Barfield to make a motion to accept the purchase of a 2011 Dodge truck from Rick’s Auto sale in the amount of $11,600.00;

Moved by Alderman Charles Barfield and second by Alderman Mike Hall to make a motion to accept the purchase of 3,000 gallons Sodium Bisulfite in the amount of $10.000 from Brentag for the Disposal Plant;

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Chad Lewis to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills;
