Meridian Community Unit School District 101 students suspended 228 times in a single school year

Meridian Community Unit School District 101 reported 228 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred two students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 228 students during the year. That equates to 48 percent of the 475 students enrolled.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes three incidents. There were one incidents of violence without physical injury. For two incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 224 out-of-school suspensions, 185 were given to boys and 39 were given to girls, including 189 elementary or middle schoolers and 35 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 124 incidents. There were 98 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 120 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
