Massac County Unit School District #1 students suspended, expelled 633 times in a single school year

Massac County Unit School District #1 reported eight expulsions and 625 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 633 students during the year. That equates to 28.6 percent of the 2,214 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for five incidents with violence without physical injury, two incidents with drugs and one incident with unspecified reasons.

Of the 508 in-school suspensions, 262 were given to boys and 246 were given to girls, including 68 elementary or middle schoolers and 439 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 508 incidents. For 504 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 117 out-of-school suspensions, 99 were given to boys and 18 were given to girls, including 40 elementary or middle schoolers and 77 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 101 incidents. There were 16 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 39 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
