Cairo Unit School District 1 students suspended 96 times in a single school year

Cairo Unit School District 1 reported 96 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 96 students during the year. That equates to 21.8 percent of the 441 students enrolled.

Of the 96 out-of-school suspensions, 62 were given to boys and 34 were given to girls, including 46 elementary or middle schoolers and 50 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 49 incidents. There were 43 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 44 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
