Metropolis FD responds to 37 fires in 2017

Metropolis Fire Department responded to 62 calls in 2017 - 17.3 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Metropolis included 37 fires - 22 structure fires, six vehicle fires and nine other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $324,210 in fire loss - or about $8,762 per fire.

The department also received 24 false calls, including one malicious call and 23 other false calls.

One fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Metropolis Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 10 active employees and seven retired or inactive employees, was $104,741 in debt as of June 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $2,909 for every fire in 2016.
